I have been volunteering at The Brick since May 2020. I applied in April soon after the first lockdown was introduced. As I am retired and have the time , I felt I wanted to make a positive contribution in some way to society and , if I am being honest, as I live alone, it was an opportunity to be able to have contact with other people . I chose the Brick as it is local to me with a focus on homelessness which is close to my heart . I am greatly enjoying my time working at the foodbank. The other volunteers are pleasant and friendly and easy to get on with . Plus , we all have the same outlook and understand the importance of the work the Brick does. I continue to gain a deeper insight into the plight of the homeless and the different ‘arms’ of the charity through discussions with the staff who are keen to provide training to ensure that the volunteers feel part of the team. Ideas and suggestions from volunteers are welcomed and acted upon . We’re all working towards one goal. I volunteered at the Brick because of the lockdown but I would hope to continue volunteering in whatever capacity once these strange times have passed. Covid 19 will eventually disappear but , unfortunately, it is doubtful that homelessness will .
