The Brick Food bank | |
|
The Brick has expanded its Food Bank operation to meet demand locally in the last 3 months. We used to give out 120 parcels a month on average 6 months ago and we are now giving out nearer to 400 a month. This is an incredible achievement by the Community who have kept us supplied with donations, through their love and support. We operate on a referral system, so people in need can go to agencies such as the Life Centres, the Job Centre, CAB, Children's centres, schools, GPs or Housing Associations to get a referral. They can then come to the Brick - either to our Wigan Office, or Leigh Library on a Tuesday to pick up their parcel. We are currenly working with local Churches to make satellite food banks where parcels can be picked up, and these should be operational in June. If you would like to make a donation, call down and drop it off at the Brick, or ring Howard on 01942 23653 and he will pick it up for you.

The Brick has now moved | |
|
The Brick has traditionally over the last 5 years helped people in crisis, moved homeless people into accommodation and supported people to live independently. We have also provided an outreach service to rough sleepers – building trust in them and working towards rehousing them. We have done this work quietly and unobtrusively in the old Bricklayers Arms in Hallgate.
But now the Brick has moved!
We are still doing all our usual things but from new premises which are off Library Street in the town centre. From 1st April when crisis loans finish, we expect to be even busier, trying to help people with debt, managing their finances, supplying food parcels and helping with housing issues through one to one advice.
The Brick is also setting up a recovery college named Re@B which will improve people’s confidence and practical skills. Alongside practical help, people want to learn to cope with their own issues and problems that will give them skills for life. The Brick has run a life skills programme every Tuesday for the last eighteen months and the students that have been on the course have learned so much and are grateful for the help they have received. Dave says “I was referred by Social Services to help me with anger management. During my time on the course, we have done several topics which have helped with every area of my life. The tutor Chris and the rest of the group are brilliant – they always listen and don’t judge me. During my time on the course I had a battle to get my children back. With what I learned and listened to I put the knowledge into practice and I have now got my children back. I really don’t know where I would be now if it wasn’t for the course.”
Building on this course, we are now able to offer courses running 4 days a week, and the topics for the first 6 weeks include:
• Managing relationships – Monday mornings
• Managing change – Monday afternoons
• Confidence building – Tuesday mornings
• Communication – Tuesday afternoons
• Patterns of behaviour – Thursday mornings
• Breaking a destructive lifestyle – Thursday afternoons
• Art and craft – Friday mornings
The trainer is Chris Astbury from C & M Training who has over 20 years training experience and an empathy for people. All the courses are interactive, sometimes challenging, but always non-judgmental and non-threatening.
These courses are available to anyone in the Wigan Borough who feel that this would help them improve their life style and make a positive contribution to the Community. There is no cost, no entry requirements and we are hoping that future courses will be shaped by the people taking part. Further ideas at the moment include motivation and self-esteem, being involved in the community, anger management, conflict resolution, handling responsibility, skills for employment and tenancy skills. We aim to link to traditional colleges, volunteering roles, and mentoring to be able to provide opportunities for people to take this further.
If you would like to enrol call 01942 236953 and ask for an enrolment form or call in the Brick in Hallgate up to 31st March and in Rowbottom Square from 1st April.
