Meet Brick Volunteer Luke

When did you start volunteering with The Brick?

I started volunteering at The Brick September, 2024.

What made you choose to volunteer with The Brick ?

I saw the work The Brick was doing in my local community and the impact it had on service users, which influenced my decision to help out and volunteer where and when I can.

What do you enjoy about volunteering with us ?

I’ve enjoyed meeting new people from all backgrounds and trying my best in order to find solutions to concerns some people may have.

What would you say to someone who was thinking about starting to volunteer ?

I would recommend to anyone thinking about starting to volunteer to do so as it’s a great way to give back and you’re not only making a difference to someone else’s life, but it’s also rewarding for yourself.

Meet Brick Volunteer Karen

When did you start volunteering with The Brick?
I began volunteering in spring 2021.

Why The Brick?
I wanted to give back to the community and support the most vulnerable in our society. I also hoped to meet new people and make friends—which I definitely have!

What do you enjoy about volunteering with us?
There are so many ways to support people through The Brick. I love helping customers in the shop, offering a friendly face, and chatting with those who might need some advice. It’s uplifting and truly rewarding.

What would you say to someone thinking about volunteering?
Volunteering has helped me build meaningful bonds within my community. It’s boosted my social skills and given me a deeper understanding of the needs around us.

Meet Brick Volunteer Jean

When did you start volunteering with The Brick?

I started volunteering at the Brick in March 2020. Lockdown had just been announced and the Government put out a general call for volunteers. This got me thinking and I decided to do something local to support my community. 5 years later and I’m still here!

What made you choose to volunteer with The Brick ?

I chose the Brick because it supports the homeless and I’ve always taken a keen interest in the issues around homelessness, supporting National Charities such as Shelter,  Crisis and Centre Point.

What do you enjoy about volunteering with us ?

There’s a great atmosphere at the Food Community. Staff are very welcoming and friendly and really appreciate our support. Volunteers are made to feel part of the team and we are encouraged to put forward ideas and suggestions. I have made new friends and I always leave with a smile on my face and feeling that I’ve been useful.

What would you say to someone who was thinking about starting to volunteer ?

If you are considering volunteering then I can unreservedly recommend joining the Brick. You will be made to feel very welcome. There are various roles in which you can provide vital support – the Food Community, the retail shops as well as supporting the homeless.
